Tamsen, this is the reality of countries like Italy. I live here for more than 30 years and I know about the big words and the money, even the money sent by you and me to help, disappearing in a few pockets and the people are left alone. Who cares? The government does not, neither the bureaucracy, even of towns and villages. You are meant to do everything yourself, you are required to know yourself what taxes you need to pay and how much — and as you cannot know, some years afterwards you get bills to pay increased by punishment fees — for things which you didn’t get any notice for. The Italian state is not in place for the people, neither is the administration. It is there for themselves, to find secure jobs and to enjoy the power they have over others.

I am really very sorry for what has happened to you and your neighbors — and for the loss of your confidence into a good life in this country. There is no solidarity, only among people you are friends with. Keep up talking about the situation in this country, call them out in important places (newspapers in other countries, alternative info sources etc.) And never believe what official sources tell you in terms of promises!
